McCullough / Tharp Family Scholarship

The Licking Heights Alumni Association is proud to announce a NEW scholarship now available to LH graduates. This new scholarship is endowed by several of our exceptional alums, all members of the McCullough/Tharp family, in honor of their mother Anna E. McCullough Tharp. Even though the McCullough/Tharp family has created this scholarship fund, they continue to support the Licking Heights Alumni Scholarship fund each year with their personal and generous donations. To further understand the meaning of this scholarship, we asked the family to elaborate on its creation. Mr. John Tharp, class of ‘65, sent us the following response (in part).

The scholarship is The Anna E. McCullough Tharp Scholarship. That is the way it is formed with the Licking County Foundation and incorporates what our family wanted in the name.

We established the scholarship to memorialize our Mother and to do so through Licking Heights because of the role it has played in our family’s life. With six of Mom’s eight children having graduated from the school and in view of the wonderful education we all feel we received, it was a logical choice. Mom was a great proponent of education and stressed the importance of education to all of us. So too did Licking Heights. By connecting the scholarship with the school; we hope to honor the memory of our Mother and to help other students continue the quest for higher education.

It was our hope that in conjunction with the Foundation the guidance staff at the high school would create a writing competition as part of the decision process in making the award. We had also hoped the competition would be named the Raye Richter writing competition to also honor his contribution to our educations and those of so many more.

Finally, in answer to your questions, we established and announced the scholarship this year because on November 16, we will mark the 100th anniversary of Mom’s birth. Mom had always said she was going to live to be 100. Unfortunately we lost her to cancer in 1987. However, she lives on in each of us. Now, her memory will live on in each recipient and applicant for the scholarship. Mom was quite humble and would be embarrassed by the scholarship. She would, however, be proud of the contributions of her family to the community and continued efforts at education through Lickings Heights.
